Dr. Moore's Blog on Racism and The Gospel:

If you want to follow any of the links he mentions in the article his blog is on our bloglist in the side bar. This is worth your time...

A few weeks ago, I told the folks in my congregation to forget all the pictures of white people they’ve seen in their childhood Sunday school Bible story books. The only white people in the Bible were lepers.

But white supremacy dies hard.

The Texas Baptist Standard newspaper recently published an article about trans-ethnic adoption, and about the ways our Lord is using orphan care to break down barriers of racial division. Buried within the story, though, is an anecdote that ought to get all of our attention.

The newspaper says that a missionary couple were forbidden, by official church action, to speak in some churches because of the fact that their Tanzanian-born children are of a different ethnicity than the people church.

Now, let me say first of all, I cannot independently verify that this actually happened. All that I know is what I read in the newspaper, in this case. But the very question ought to make us think.

When Joel Rainey, a church planting strategist from Maryland, read the article, he posted the following on my Facebook wall: “The church that refused to let this couple speak because of their racist ideology should be disfellowshipped at the associational, state, and national level.”

He went on to say that white supremacist churches (or, I’m sure he’d agree, black supremacist churches, for that matter) are no different than congregations disfellowshipped for supporting sexual liberationist ideologies, “disobedient to Scripture in order to appeal to the darker elements of culture.”

I could not agree more.

As I’ve written so many other places that I’ll not reiterate it here, white supremacy is idolatrous and not consonant with a gospel that finds us in Christ Jesus, a gospel that reconciles us to God and to one another (Eph. 2-3) and that crucifies every ounce of pride in the flesh (Phil. 3).

If we’re going to be missional, if we’re going to resurge together for the Great Commission, it will mean first recognizing that racial bigotry isn’t just “politically incorrect.” It’s of the spirit of antichrist, and must go.

And, by the way, let’s also change our Sunday school storybook Bible pictures.

Pun-kins Part 2...

Punkins as they are known by most of the kids in our neighborhood. Geeegaaahh...as they're known by Truett. This is them.
This one is a pretty big punkin bearing our family crest and a small jack-o-lantern off to the side.
Buzz.
Zoe ate the middle part out of the GT. Seriously.
Funny face.
If you're looking to carve some punkins and need some ideas go to www.pumpkinlady.com There are some cool patterns on there. They're not free, but you can free hand them on a piece of paper or just use it to make up your own as seen above.

Pumpkin Time

This is pumpkin one of three...he'll get to the others after some Greek.

Shana's Update: Cutest things

This is one of my favorite sites. Josh likes to spend time with Truett in the morning in our bed. This is Josh teaching Truett how to lift his neck on his tummy. They are so cute together.
Trying to get as many more wears of his coke shirt as possible. He wore this on Sunday to church. Josh thought his diaper looked like shorts and that he looked funny, so he wanted me to take a picture. Look at those chubby legs he is so adorable. I absolutely love his little converse socks though. I had just changed his diaper, no worries we had some little jeans on him. SOO cute.

Shana's Update: Truett's Heads Up

This week has been boot camp for Truett to learn to lift up his head. Truett has two friends that are within weeks of his age that are way ahead of him in the neck lifting stage so we had to work on it so that when we see them again tomorrow we are up to par. (mostly joking about that)

New Truett Video...

Truett is best in the morning. Here's why...

The Fall and Espionage

Today I came out of the apartment. It was a nice day weather-wise so I grabbed the camera. I noticed....

...this tree. It reminded me of fall. the leaves are really changing quickly around here. Then I noticed....
...this couple. I have no idea who they are. They have some cute puppies though. Then I realized that this is some kind of espionage and that zoom on my camera is awesome.

Shana's Update: What Grandma made!

Look what Grandma Judy made for Truett. They are Georgia Tech overalls. They are super cute. Not sure how many wears he'll get out of them, but he got to wear them the other day and he was super adorable. Grandma Judy also made a fisherman hat to go with these, but the hat is a little big he'll be able to grow into that one.

The Future Has Arrived....

I know we're a little late in discovering this technology that has been around for a while, but we are now on Skype. We use it to talk to my parents so they can see Truett. Yes, I said "SEE." Its basically an online FREE video phone. All you need is a web cam. Its super easy to use and really fun. So, if any of you are on Skype give us a call. If you aren't on Skype, you give it a try. It feels like we're all the way in the year 2000!

Flood...

My dad figured out how to post videos on YouTube. Congrats dad. He had taken a video last week of the most recent flood in their back yard. This was taken on the same day that Shana and I left Georgia to come back to Louisville. I'll set up this video a little with another video for context...

This first video was what I took of my parents house the day before we moved a year and a half ago. Its not very good quality. Sorry. If you go to the 1:37 mark you'll see a fence on the right as I drive down to the back yard. From 1:37 to 2:07 is all of the back yard that is flooded in the next video...

Here's my dad's video from last week...

Here's another video of Andy doing stuff that makes me wish I had stayed another day just to do this...

Desolation...

This is the reason that living in Louisville is rough on the sports soul. This was the front page of the sports section in the Courier Journal yesterday. Its right in the middle of the the NFL and College Football seasons; the MLB post-season is in full swing; and we've got College Soccer.

I'm thinking of starting an A.A. type meeting for sports fans in Louisville.

Shana's Update: Vacation Day 6

This was an anticipated day. We had a little party to introduce Truett to some of our closest friends here in Atlanta. We had a lot of fun hanging out for the day. It was supposed to rain, but it held off, which we were so glad for because we planned on roasting hot dogs and marshmallows on the fire outback. Thank you to everybody who made it, we really enjoyed spending time with everyone.
Here is a picture of Lauren, Zach, Jonathan, Me, Josh, and Truett.
Their onsies say Best Friends, how adorable. Lauren got them. It was hilarious when we took these pictures. Everybody was surrounded around the couch snapping pictures with flashes going crazy. You would of thought these were Brad and Angelina's babies, just kidding.
Here is a great picture of Andrew, Maggie's oldest son. He is such a good boy, and he is getting so big. He lost his front tooth, not sure if you can tell.
Here is a good picture of Zach and Josh out at the fire pit.
Here is a picture of all the grandmas (minus my mom). Army, Judy, and Karen (Army and Karen are Zach and Lauren's moms).

Shanas Update: Vacation Day 5

This was another fun filled day. We went up to the outlet malls to do some shopping. Josh got a lot of stuff, as for Truett and I, we got very little. We had a good time hanging out shopping with Andy and Caitlin.

Then we went off to visit Grandma Minnie. This is Dean's mom, Truett's great grandma. I was super tired and fell asleep a few times on the couch, oops.

After visiting with Grandma Minnie, we were off to see Zach and Lauren for the first time. They had their son 5 weeks after Josh and I. We were super excited to meet Jonathan Zachary and see their new house. All of us went out to eat for mexican, it was super yummy. I had been craving me some cheese dip.

You can totally tell we are holding each others babys can't you?!

Shana's Update: Vacation Day 4

Another super fun day at the Stringer House. Truett and I took a few walks around the property as the pups hauled but in the open field. They love it here, the pups, I know Bogie won't be sad we left him behind. He'll probably be calling Zoe a sucker for going back with us. Josh worked more hours on his project for one of his classes.

I forgot to mention that a couple of days ago I got bored. It caught me by surprise. With Judy here with open arms to take care of Truett, I was like what am I going to do. Well, I pulled out all my sewing stuff downstairs and played with my sewing machine. I need to work on my confidence with it. A couple years ago I was over at Judy's all the time using her sewing machine, so that Christmas she decided to get me my own sewing machine. Well, I told her I don't know if I would use it because she didn't come with it. Sure enough, the other day I got stuck and yelled up to Judy through the speaker to come help me. Right now I am finishing up some projects that I left undone. I found some fabrics that I love and forgot I had. I would really like to make a curtain for my kitchen and maybe some new cushion covers for my dining room table. We'll see what I have time for. There is no room to take my sewing machine back with me to school this time, but hopefully in Thanksgiving Dean and Judy might be able to bring it up to me when they come to visit.

Thursday night dinner was at the Howard's House. I love going there. The entire family is so sweet and hospitable. It was really great to get to catch up and visit with Jen and Madison too.

Here is Madison and Truett hanging out. We tried to get Madison to give Truett a kiss, but she wasn't interested. I guess boys already have cooties.

Here is everybody at the Howard's house. We had a bunch of people. This is all of us hanging out in the kitchen.

Joanna played the piano for us for dinner. It was super lovely. You can see Madison trying to help out in the bottom left. How cute right.

Shana's Update: Vacation Day 3

Today was a favorite day. Maggie came up to get some one-on-one Shana time, which was sweet. I got to see Eli. A Little tidbit of information, I was in the delivery room when Eli was born. It was pretty amazing. Maggie is a pretty cool friend for allowing us in there during that super personal time.

Also, Jenny came through town and stopped for a little break in her drive. I have written about her before on my blog. We are long old friends from before college. We are from the same hometown and church. I got to see her babies. Caris is so big and gorgeous and Saleh was born 4 weeks earlier then Truett, what a little cutie. I thought Caris looked a lot like her daddy, well wait till you see Saleh. As Caris gets bigger though she looks more and more like her mommy. It was really great to get to see them. I really enjoyed playing around with Caris, makes me more open to having girls. Caris is a sweet and good one. I wish they were close by because I miss Jenny in my life all the time. I wish I could watch her family grow up close-up. O well, God has seperate plans for our lives.

Truett is already a stud, look at him going for the older chick.

Josh made dinner today. This was one thing he really wanted to do, was cook on his grill. So, he got it out and cleaned it up. He made boneless babyback ribs w/the bbq sauce of course from scratch. We also had some really good macaroni salad with lots of veggies from the garden. Judy made fried okra, but I am not that much of a southern girl to like that. Josh loves it though. Again, pound cake for dessert.

Random shot in the day. Josh really likes our new camera.

Shana's Update: Vacation Day 2

Day 2 was pretty relaxing as well. We had dinner with the entire Jansen Family and Lance. It was good to see them. I forgot to take a picture. It has been forever since we have seen Mark, Ashley, and their son Hamilton, as well as Lance. I forgot Lance was a single dude, don't know how I could forget that detail, but tried to hook him up with one of my friends. Showed him pictures of her, we'll see what comes of that since she isn't local. Judy made lasagna, salad, and bread for dinner. We had the world famous Judy pound cake too.

Here are some shots from the day.

Judy doing what she does best - COOKING!!!!!

Grandpa Dean and Truett Dean having play time.

The cradle that Dean made, Truett has been having many naps in it.

Shana's Update: Vacation Day 1

So, we got in safely yesterday. We left at about 5:30 in the morning. We had planned to leave at 3 when Truett usually gets up for a feeding, but due to the fact we were still packing last night and didn't do a really good job of getting Truett to bed, he never got to bed till 11pm. Therefore, we didn't get much sleep and opted to leave a tad later to get a little more sleep. The drive went well, but we got stuck in Nashville due to traffic. After a year of trying to find Chick-fil-as along our route, we finally found one and ate breakfast there. It was on the other side of Nashville. We'll have to remember it is there.

We also used our roof-top bag for the first time. We were very pleased with it, storage-wise. We were really bummed though when we opened it because we had thought we purchased a water-proof bag and that is why we shelled out the extra bucks for it, but ended up it wasn't. We purchased it well over 30 days ago too so not sure about taking it back, but I am sure I could write a letter to the company about mis-representing the product they sold us. We probably should have tested it out sooner. Well, our stuff wasn't really wet when we got here, maybe two items of clothing. On the way back we are going to put our bags inside of trash bags and see if that helps.

As you see below Josh went through old pictures to find his baby photos to compare. My mom is sending me mine so that I can compare too. Almost everybody says Truett looks like me, I think because of his prominent nose and cheeks, but I wonder as he gets older if he will look more like his daddy because he definitely has his daddy's eyes.

Our first day home wasn't really eventful. We mostly unpacked and got settled in. We had a great dinner. Judy made chicken with lots of fresh veggies from the garden and biscuits. Truett slept in the cradle for the first time. Most of you know that we are using the same crib that Josh and Andy used, well Truett is now sleeping in the same cradle. It is really old, but really beautiful. Dean and Andy spent time getting back in usable condition for Truett and future grandkids.

Here is grandma getting her fix in on day 1. As I type this now grandma is rocking Truett to sleep for his morning nap.

I did learn something yesterday. I think Truett was over stimulated by all the newness of things and all the new things to look at and all the new people holding him. He didn't do well with feeding and getting him down to sleep. Today I am going to focus on trying to make sure he gets all those things he needs and not let him overdo it to much. I say that cause normally he takes a morning nap, we'll see if he does while he is here.

Who is Who? (or is it Whom??)

Today we got home (to Atlanta). We found a baby picture of me at 2 weeks and I put it with a few pictures of Truett. Shana thinks we look a lot a like. I'm not sold on it, but I guess I can see it. Keep in mind that my picture was taken in 1978.

Truett Is Popular!

We just hit 20,000 views. Wow. Truett is one popular dude.

Shana's Update: Daily Routine

This has become part of our daily routine. Naps in the moby wrap. After taking many a online - youtube videos on how to use this wrap it is again my favorite. I now need to master my sling, back to the youtube videos to perfect that one.

Pretty much every morning Truett takes his mid morning/afternoon nap in this when we take the pups for a walk. I also wear him to church in it every Sunday.

Shana's Update: Truett Sick

Truett has gotten his first sickness. He is congested and has an ear infection. We are on day 3 of antibiotics. My poor guy doesn't feel well, but he is still doing really great. Sleeping like a champ right now in his swing. Also, 2 more days until we go home to ATL - GA. We can't wait to see everybody.
