Birthday Party Planning

Hello all. I know I have some seasoned birthday party throwers out there reading this right now and I need your help. I am trying to find some stuff for Truett's first birthday party and get good deals. Any of ya'll have any recommendations? I am looking at a Tractor/Farm theme. I would love to get a helium tank for balloons, any advise? Thanks a ton.

Hey girl, it's Danielle sis-in-law...I saw your post from her blog.....

I'm in the process of planning Layton's 3rd birthday also! His birthday is on August 13th, so I have been searching for invites, decorations, etc. I think we are doing the party on the 14th.

I have found some really cute things on "oriental trading company". Google it, they have all kinds of party stuff! 1st birthdays are so special!

We are going with a cowboy theme, we did the farm theme last year....you'll have to check out my archives from last august and check out the pics! ;)

Can you believe how fast one year goes. Scary, huh?

Here is one of my favorite sites for ideas. . .don't get sucked in too far, though, you can spend lots of time here!! http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/farm.html

I also google images for cakes and get lots of ideas that way. We've never done the farm theme. . . so I'm excited to see what you do!

My only advice for parties is to keep it simple, but go to town having fun with the few things you do decide to do. For example, I can't do party favors, decorations, invitations, cake, fancy foods, fancy drinks, creative games, AND tons of guests AND, AND, AND. . .the list goes on so I pick what couple of things I want. For instance, I may want to invite lots of people, so I keep the menu simple and don't try to do organized games but have it at a public park or somewhere where the children can run and entertain themselves. I always try to have one fun drink and one fun food item that is memorable.

Being budget-conscious, I'm not big on the decorations, I calculate that most of the cost of a party is in the food, decorations and party favors. It can add up fast. I just helped someone buy paper goods for a small party and the paper goods alone (no decorations) were about $40!! At Truett's age, he doesn't care if there are farm-themed plates or napkins. However, if you really like that, then they are out there.

Children love dressing up, so I've known parents to ask guests to come dressed up. You could ask guests to come in their favorite "grungie" clothes or dressed as a farmer or farm animal. This makes for fun pictures and sometimes we just need another excuse to use the items in our dressup box.

I can hardly believe Truett is one year old! You were pregnant when we met you!!!

Oriental Trading company usually has cheap decorations, little toys, candy, etc. In general, the "party store" is over priced but sometimes they surprise me.

Paper streamer is a lot of bang for the buck. You can get stuff like that, paper plates, napkins, etc in the party COLORS and save on getting them in the party THEME.

At my baby showers there were a lot of actual toys ($1 store, Big Lots, whatever) that were the decor. So the boys had toys for later and they made a big statement as decor...
